Hungary’s climate policy goals

“Europe 2020” is a new strategy of European Union which aims at the reduction of the carbon dioxide emissions and energy utilization by 20% and to improve the share of renewable in the energy mix by 20% and this comes as a big challenge for Hungary.

Many countries have set a goal of reduction of Co2 emissions of 40% but many commentators believe that it is impossible as Hungary as already reduced its emissions by 25% since 1990 for the restructuring of the economy, but it has created an inconsistent situation where Hungary will have more emissions quota in 2020 than it had in 2005.

10% of the quota increase has been granted to Hungary for its efforts and it could generate over €3.5bn by keeping emissions at present level & selling its additional quotas. The improvement of the energy efficiency and the fall of its consumption lie with the interests of the Hungary, which has its huge reliance on imported energy of nearly 70%.

“Hungary’s energy consumption trends have declined by almost 10% between 1990 and 2004 but there was a growth in the proportion of gas utilization by 30%. A target of 13% growth in the share of the renewable has been set to Hungary in 2008 by EU and it can be achieved within the given time frame even if the share of renewable in the energy mix is around 5%”- as per the research by the European Wind Energy Association.

Until 2015, this subsidy system gives a clear picture and the government and EU will continue its promotion for the green electricity by providing funds and cutting taxes for the use of the renewable, featuring efficiency, sustainability, decentralization and diversification as the main principles of strategy.

Major car hire companies at airport are Avis, Budget, Hertz, Sixt and Europcar.
